Trans and gender diverse people experience marginalization and discrimination throughout society, including healthcare settings. A lack of adequate training leaves many healthcare providers feeling unprepared to support and care for trans and gender diverse individuals, exacerbating health disparities. Compared to cisgender people, trans individuals face greater barriers to accessing care, experience an increased burden of disease with a significantly greater incidence of behavioral health issues and disproportionately higher rates of suicide.
Healthcare education has a critical role to play in eliminating health disparities. The skills emphasized by gender-affirming care practices improve provider competence to deliver care to diverse individuals.
